노벨문학상 수상자인 영국의 작가 조지 버나드 쇼는 일상의 피신처가 되는 공간으로 호텔을 지목합니다. 우리의 일상 공간 곳곳에는 근심이 묻어 있기 마련이지만, 깨끗하게 잘 정돈된 호텔방은 오롯이 나를 위해 집중할 수 있는 명상공간이 되어주기 때문일 것입니다. 그래서 우리는 호텔 로비에 들어서는 것만으로도 낯섦과 동시에 안락한 휴식의 여정을 기대하게 됩니다. 


‘THE TRINITY at Grand Hyatt Seoul’에서 2023년 8월 28일부터 10월 28일까지 개최되는 이번 <THE WINDOW : Space of Meditation>展에서는 인적이 사라진 공간의 고요한 안온함을 ‘창’이라는 매개를 통해 가장 감각적으로 표현해온 임창민, 황선태 작가의 작품을 선보입니다.

세계 유수의 아트씬에서 약진하고 있는 미디어 아티스트 임창민은 전세계의 아름다운 명소를 촬영한 사진과 영상을 결합한 ‘Into a Time Frame’ 연작으로 잘 알려져 있습니다. 작가는 바깥 풍경이 내다보이는 건물 내부의 창을 ‘사진’으로 촬영하고, 그 안에 자연 풍경이 천천히 흐르는 ‘영상’을 삽입해서 작품을 완성합니다. 작품 속 창 너머로 보이는 미묘한 자연의 숨결에 편안하게 몰입하다 보면, 어느덧 임창민 작가가 직조한 고유의 시공간 속에서 치유되고 있는 자신을 발견하게 됩니다.

‘빛이 드는 공간’ 연작으로 세계적인 아트콜렉터들의 주목을 받는 현대 조각가 황선태는 ‘창’을 통해 들어온 실내 공간 속 볕의 그림자를 유리와 LED라는 독자적 방식을 통해 표현해 왔습니다. 작가가 투명하고 밝은 녹색의 선으로 구현한 빛과 사물의 직관적 세계는 청량하면서도 아늑한 정서를 선사합니다. 인간이 사라진 자리, 가구와 작은 동물들, 그들을 비추는 빛과 그림자가 비어 있던 공간을 따스한 위로로 가득 채웁니다.

‘창’을 중심으로 신비로운 사색의 공간을 연출하는 두 작가, 임창민과 황선태의 작품을 품격과 예술의 정점이 만나 예술적 안식처를 지향하는 ‘THE TRINITY at Grand Hyatt Seoul’에서 감상해 보세요. 



George Bernard Shaw, the British author who won the Nobel Prize for Literature, regularly visited hotels where he penned his famous works. It was perhaps due to the fact that he might have found many daily places distracting, but a cleanly organized hotel room was ideal for meditation. Like Shaw, stepping into a hotel lobby can make us feel unfamiliar yet excited as we look forward to a journey of comfort.
‘THE TRINITY at Grand Hyatt Seoul’ presents the exhibition “THE WINDOW : Space of Meditation” from August 28 to October 28, 2023, featuring artworks by Lim Chang Min and Hwang Seon Tae who have shown some of the most compelling works on tranquil comfort found in uninhabited spaces through the medium “window.”

Media artist Lim Chang Min, active in many art scenes worldwide, is better known for the series “Into a Time Frame,” combining photographs and video footage of well-known scenic attractions. Lim takes pictures of the window inside a building overlooking the external landscape and then inserts a slowly flowing video stream of natural scenery to complete his artwork. Invited into the comfortable image of the exquisite nature outside the window, viewers can find themselves being healed within the time and space frame created by artist Lim Chang Min.

Contemporary sculptor Hwang Seon Tae, who has earned rave reviews for his “Space with Light” series from art collectors around the world, uniquely expresses shadows of lights shone through the window in interior spaces using glass and LED lights. The light depicted with transparent bright green lines and his intuitive world of objects offers refreshing, cozy feelings. A peopleless space with furniture, small animals, rays of light, and shadows presents us with warm feelings of consolation.
