 2024년은 한국과 카타르 수교 50주년이 되는 해입니다. 이를 기념하여 주한 카타르 대사관과 코리아타임스는, 카타르의 사람, 건축, 그리고 삶을 주제로 세 명의 사진작가와 함께 <THE PEARL OF QATAR> 특별전을 공동 개최합니다.

카타르와 한국은 서로 유사한 결을 지녔습니다. 카타르는 아라비아반도 동쪽에 위치하여 그 영토는 크지 않지만, 무한한 저력을 가진 국가입니다. 진주조개잡이가 주력 산업이었던 해변 마을은, 불과 50여 년 만에 석유와 천연가스 수출 산업으로 세계 최강국의 반열까지 도약해 냅니다. 또한, 삼면이 바다로 해상 무역의 요충지였던 카타르는 수 세기 동안의 침략과 지배의 세월 끝에, 인내와 고통 속에 조개가 진주를 만들어내듯, 1971년 독립하여 눈부신 성장을 이뤄냈습니다.

이번 <THE PEARL OF QATAR> 전시는 ‘중동의 진주’라 불리는 카타르의 아름다움을 People(사람), Architecture(건축), Life(삶)라는 세 가지의 테마로 구성했습니다.

첫 번째 테마인 ‘People of Qatar’는, 코리아타임스의 최원석 사진기자가 세계 최초로 겨울에 열린 2022년 카타르 월드컵을 취재하며 작업한 연작으로, 이슬람 문화를 중심으로 다민족 문화가 공존하는 ’사람들’을 기록합니다. 작품 속 사람들은 인종과 나이, 종교를 떠나 세계인의 축제를 한마음으로 즐김과 동시에, 기도를 올리고, 전통 놀이를 하며 축제 밖 일상을 온건히 살아갑니다.

두 번째는 ‘Architecture of Qatar’입니다. 카타르의 사진작가 유스프 무바락 알도사리는 ‘건축물’과 ‘랜드마크’의 인적이 드문 순간을 포착해, 카타르의 전통과 현대를 조명해 왔습니다. 그의 카메라 렌즈는 카타르의 영토를 닮은 바위 유적지부터, 무역산업을 상징하는 목조 선박을 거쳐, 화려하게 빛나는 수도 도하의 야경으로 옮겨갑니다. 작가의 시선이 닿는 곳곳마다 과거와 현대가 직조되어, 한 프레임 안에서 조화롭게 설계됩니다.

세 번째 테마, ‘Life of Qatar’에서는 카타르의 역동적인 ‘삶’의 현장과 그 문화가 살아 숨 쉬는 곳으로 가까이 다가가 봅니다. 압둘라 함단 알만나이 작가는 카타르의 해양 공예 유산을 계승하는 어선 장인의 삶을 클로즈업하고, 도하의 초현대적인 스카이라인 속에서 살아가는 삶까지 담아냅니다. 이를 통해 현재의 카타르, 내일의 카타르의 혼은 또 어떻게 변화할지 상상해 보게 합니다.

주한 카타르 대사관과 코리아타임스는 카타르의 숭고한 아름다움을 ‘PEARL’이라는 단어에 응축하여, 대한민국 서울의 중심에서 문화 교류의 장을 마련하게 되었습니다. 이번 특별 사진전을 통해, 한국과 카타르가 예술의 힘으로 평화와 화합, 그리고 우정을 굳건히 다지는 기회가 되기를 기대합니다.

The year 2024 marks 50 years of Qatar-Korea diplomatic relations. To commemorate this milestone, the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Seoul and The Korea Times have collaborated to co-host “THE PEARL OF QATAR,” a special photo exhibition showcasing the people, architecture, and life of Qatar.

Qatar and Korea share similar characteristics. Located on the eastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, Qatar may not be vast in territory, but it is a nation with boundless potential. Once a coastal village primarily engaged in pearl diving, Qatar has, in just over fifty years, leaped forward to become one of the world’s leading nations through its oil and natural gas export industry. Additionally, Qatar, a key maritime trade hub surrounded by sea on three sides, has achieved remarkable growth since its independence in 1971, much like a pearl formed through pain and perseverance.

The exhibition “THE PEARL OF QATAR” showcases the beauty of Qatar, known as the “Pearl of the Middle East,” through three themes: People, Architecture, and Life. The first theme, “People of Qatar,” features a series by Choi Won-suk, a photojournalist for The Korea Times, who covered the 2022 Qatar World Cup, the first to be held in winter. His work documents the people living in a multi-ethnic society centered around Islamic culture. The people depicted in the works, regardless of race, age, or religion, wholeheartedly enjoy a global festival together. They pray, engage in traditional games, and fully live their everyday lives beyond the festivities. The second theme is “Architecture of Qatar.” Qatari photographer Yousuf Mubarak Al-Dosari has illuminated Qatar’s tradition and modernity by capturing the sparsely populated moments of its architecture and landmarks. His camera lens moves from ancient rock sites resembling Qatar’s territory, to wooden vessels symbolizing the trade industry, to the dazzling nightscape of the capital city, Doha. Everywhere the artist’s gaze lands, the past and present are woven together to create a harmonious design within a single frame. The third theme, “Life of Qatar,” brings us closer to the vibrant scenes of Qatari life and the places where its culture lives and breathes. Photographer Abdullah Hamdan Al-Mannai focuses on the life of a traditional boat craftsman, preserving Qatar’s maritime heritage, and also captures the lives of people amid Doha’s futuristic skyline. Through this, we are invited to imagine how the soul of present-day Qatar will evolve.

the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Seoul and The Korea Times have encapsulated the sublime beauty of Qatar in the word “PEARL,” creating a space for cultural exchanges in the heart of Seoul. Through this exhibition, we hope to provide an opportunity for Korea and Qatar to strengthen their bonds of peace, harmony, and friendship through the power of art.
