더 트리니티 갤러리는 8월 22일부터 31일까지 드랙(Drag) 아티스트 나나영롱킴의 <나, 나 : NA, NA>展을 개최합니다. 이번 전시는 ‘드랙(Drag)’을 주제로 한 나나영롱킴의 첫 번째 개인전입니다. ‘드랙’이란 사전적인 의미로는 ‘사회에 주어진 성별의 정의에서 벗어나는 겉모습으로 꾸미는 행위’를 말합니다.

과거 셰익스피어 시대 연극과 오페라에서는 여성이 무대에 오르는 일이 거의 없었기 때문에 남성연기자가 여성 역할을 위해 여장을 해야만 했습니다. 이때 여장을 한 남성 연기자가 긴 치마 등을 끌며 무대 바닥을 쓸고 지나가는 모습을 ‘드랙’으로 표현하기 시작한 것이 현재의 사전적 의미로 발전했다는 설이 유력합니다. 이러한 역사성을 가진 드랙은 현대에 와서 ‘드랙키즈’라고 불리는 전위적이고 아방가르드한 스타일이 인기를 끌기 시작, 이후 90년대부터는 화려하게 부풀린 머리와 여성적인 곡선을 강조하는 ‘미인대회 스타일’이 유행을 했습니다. 최근 들어 드랙은 이에 그치지 않고 더욱 다양한 스타일로 발전하는 중입니다. 특히 현재의 드랙은 남성이 여성처럼 꾸미거나 여성이 남성처럼 꾸민다는 과거의 전형에서 벗어나 성별과 무관하게 한 개인이 평소 자기가 추구하던 모습을 표현하기 위해 과감하게 도전하는 예술로 진화하고 있습니다. 그리고 그 선두에서 나나영롱킴과 같은 드랙 아티스트들이 활약하고 있습니다.

드랙 아티스트 나나영롱킴은 상식을 깨는 화려한 메이크업, 경계를 허무는 과감한 패션으로 대중의 눈을 사로잡으며 낯설었던 드랙을 본격적인 문화의 장으로 이끌어 왔습니다. 패션, 음악, 영화 등 다양한 장르를 넘나들며 대중들에게 신선한 문화충격을 선사한 그가 이제 드랙 전시라는 새로운 도전에 나섭니다. 그 첫 도전인 이번 전시는 콘셉트 아이디어부터 촬영 구성, 스타일링 및 소품 제작, 모델을 모두 그가 디렉팅 했고, 김문독·김현재 포토그래퍼의 촬영 작업으로 협업한 사진전입니다. 전시는 크게 <더 스포트라이트(The Spotlight)>연작과 <옐로우 맘바(Yellow Mamba)> 연작으로 나뉩니다. 극명하게 대비되는 두 콘셉트의 연작은 우리나라의 전래동화를 소재로 제작됐던 만화영화 <은비까비>스토리에서 영감을 얻었습니다. 풍성한 헤어스타일링에 정석대로 일을 처리하는 은비가 과거의 드랙을 보여준다면, 얼굴에 동그란 복면을 쓰고 감정이 이끄는대로 행동하고 일을 처리하는 까비는 현재의 드랙이 진화해가는 방향을 선명하게 보여줍니다. 시대가 변하고, 사람이 변하고, 환경이 변화하며 문화의 다양성을 존중받는 사회가 다가올수록 아름답고 화려한 드랙 문화에 대한 대중의 관심이 높아지고 있습니다. 이번 전시는 유구한 전통을 가진 과거의 드랙이 새로운 예술로 진화해 가는 모습을 생생하게 경험하는 장(場)이 될 것으로 기대합니다.


From August 22 to 31, 2022, The Trinity Gallery is holding the <NA, NA> exhibition by drag artist Nanayoungrong Kim. This exhibition is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the theme of “drag.”

“Drag” literally means “the act of decorating with an appearance that deviates from traditional social norms about gender.” In Shakespearean plays and operas centuries ago, women rarely took to the stage, and so male actors had to dress up for female roles. Male performers disguised as women dragged long skirts across the stage, from which the term “drag” originates, according to a widely believed theory. Against such historical backgrounds, the term drag began to gain ground in the modern era with an avant-garde style called “drag kids.” Since the 1990s, the “beauty pageant style” accentuating gorgeously inflated hair and feminine curves has become popular. In recent years, “drag” has continued to evolve into a wider variety of styles. Most notably, “drag” has now overcome the past stereotype of men dressing like women or women dressing like men and developed into an art form in which individuals, regardless of their gender, make bold challenges to express the images they have pursued over time. Drag artists like Nanayoungrong Kim stand tall at the forefront of such provocation. Nanayoungrong Kim has successfully pulled “drag” into the scope of mainstream arts and culture by captivating the public with his glamorous clothing and makeup intent on breaking any remaining taboos and boundaries.

Having worked in various genres such as fashion, music, film, among others, bringing a fresh cultural shock to the masses, Nanayoungrong Kim is now taking on a new challenge called a drag exhibition. This is his first drag photo exhibition for which he himself directed everything including concept development, shooting composition, styling, prop production, and modeling in association with the professional photographers of Moondog Kim and Novv Kim. The exhibition is divided into the <The Spotlight> series and the <Yellow Mamba> series. The series featuring two sharply contrasting concepts was inspired by the story of the cartoon movie <Eunbi & Kabi> based on a traditional Korean fairy tale. Eunbi with abundant hair handles things according to social norms, symbolizing the “drag” of the past whereas Kabi wears a round mask on her face and acts and handles things as dictated by her emotions, clearly indicating the direction that “drag” is now pursuing.

​Public interest is growing in the beautiful and colorful “drag” culture as cultural diversity is cherished across society in line with ongoing changes in times, people and the environment. I hope that this exhibition serves as an opportunity for visitors to vividly experience the transformation of “drag” with a centuries-old history into a completely new art form.
