국내외 현대 미술 아티스트와 다채로운 아트 프로젝트를 주도해 온 ‘더 트리니티 갤러리’는 창립 45주년을 맞이한 ‘그랜드 하얏트 서울’과의 파트너쉽을 축하하며, ‘THE TRINITY at Grand Hyatt Seoul’ 개관전 <Grand Art Celebration>을 선보일 수 있게 되어 기쁩니다. 고풍스러운 아름다움과 현대적인 감각을 겸비한 그랜드 하얏트 서울에서, 고전 명작에 현대 미술의 활기찬 숨결을 불어 넣는 한국의 대표 현대미술 아티스트 배준성, 김홍식, 유의정의 작품을 감상하실 수 있는 첫 번째 전시에 찾아와 주신 여러분들을 진심으로 환영합니다.
작가 배준성(B.1967)은 서울대학교 미술대학 서양화과, 동 대학원 석사를 졸업하고 2000년 오늘의 젊은 예술가상을 수상했습니다. ‘렌티큘러(보는 각도에 따라 그림이 변하는 프린팅 기법) 회화의 선구자’라 불리며, 세계 3대 아트페어인 영국 프리즈 아트페어(Frieze London), 스위스 아트 바젤(Art Basel), 프랑스 피악 아트페어(FIAC)에서 주목받아 온 현대미술 아티스트입니다. 작가는 고전 명화 속 모델의 의복, 일상 속 정물 그리고 배경을 현재의 공간에 배치하여, 특정 소재에 대해 새로운 의미를 부여합니다. 특히, 로코코양식의 정물(still-life)에 렌티큘러라는 현대적 기법을 더하여 과거와 현재, 하나와 다수의 양면성을 한 화면에 담아냅니다.
작가 김홍식(B.1962)은 이화여자대학교에서 미술대학 서양화, 동 대학원 석사 및 박사를 졸업하였으며 2017년 환기재단작가에 선정, 국립현대미술관, 환기미술관, 바티칸미술관 등 국내외 유수의 미술관과 갤러리에서 전시를 선보였습니다. 작가는 카메라를 들고 전 세계 유명 미술관과 박물관에서 포착한 순간들을 담아 프레임 속에 기록합니다. 세계적인 미술관을 배경으로 명작을 바라보는 사람들의 시선, 그 사람들을 바라보는 전지적 작가의 시선, 그리고 이를 또 하나의 작품으로 바라보는 관람객들의 시선까지, 작가는 무한히 이어지고 중첩되는 시선들을 스테인리스스틸을 캔버스 삼아 황금빛 프레임을 매개로 시공간을 연결합니다.
작가 유의정(B.1981)은 한국을 대표하는 현대 도예가로, 홍익대학교 미술대학, 동 대학원 석사 및 박사 과정을 졸업하고 현재 서울과학기술대학교 도예과 교수로 재직 중입니다. 2011년 서울현대도예공모전 대상을 수상하고 2013년 경기세계도자비엔날레 Hot Rookies로 선정되었으며 국립현대미술관, 영국 런던 사치갤러리, 중국 남송미술관 등 국내외 유수의 미술관과 갤러리를 통해 전시를 선보여 왔습니다. 작가는 우리나라의 전통 도자기를 현대적으로 해석하여 사람들을 단숨에 매료시킵니다. 작가의 작업은 한국의 청자, 백자 위에 화려한 패턴의 콜라주, 과감하게 흘러내리는 형형색색의 유약이 특징입니다. 또한, 정교하게 구워낸 도자 위에 코카콜라, 마릴린 먼로 등 유명 브랜드 및 캐릭터가 조합되어 있는데, 이는 서로 다른 시대의 이질성이 공존하는 작품을 통해 생각의 전환과 환기를 불러일으키게 합니다.

It gives us great pleasure to present Grand Art Celebration, the inaugural exhibition for THE TRINITY at Grand Hyatt Seoul organized to celebrate the partnership between The Trinity Gallery, which has been playing a leading role in various art projects in cooperation with emerging contemporary artists, and Grand Hyatt Seoul, which celebrates its 45 anniversary this year. We welcome you to this special event, the first exhibition held at Grand Hyatt Seoul, adored widely for its great harmony between classical beauty and modern sensibility, featuring the works by Bae Joon Sung, Kim Hong-Shik, and Yoo Eui-Jeong, three of Korea’s leading contemporary artists who have been dedicated to breathing the vitality of modern art into some of the masterpieces of the past.
Bae Joon Sung (b. 1967) is a Korean contemporary artist who, after receiving his BFA and MFA from the Department of Painting, College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University, was awarded the Young Artist of the Year in 2000. Now appreciated as “a pioneer of the Lenticular Printing,” he attracted international attention with the works he sent for the world’s three of the most prestigious contemporary art fairs: Frieze(UK), Art Basel(Switzerland), and Foire Internationale d’Art Contemporain(France). The artist places garments worn by human figures, daily objects, and backgrounds depicted in classical masterpieces in a space of the modern world, providing new meaning to the subjects of the old masterpieces. In particular, he is highly regarded for works using the techniques of modern lenticular art for the Rocco-style still life to depict the duality of past and present, and one and many.
Kim Hong-Shik (b. 1962) studied art at the Department of Painting, College of Art, Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul, where she earned her MFA and PhD. Chosen as a Whanki Foundation Artist in 2017, she has since presented her works at some of the most prestigious museums and art galleries in Korea and overseas including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Whanki Museum, and Museos Vaticanos. She uses a camera to capture the moments she considers significant at the museums and art galleries around the world, recording them in a frame. She is particularly interested in the eyes of the viewers looking at a masterpiece displayed at an exhibition hall and those of the omniscient artist watching the viewers, overlapping the eyes of both parties almost infinitely; thus trying to connect time and spaces inside a gold frame prepared on the space of a stainless steel.
A widely admired modern ceramic artist, Yoo Eui-Jeong (b. 1981) studied ceramic arts at the College of Art, Hongik University in Seoul where he completed BFA, MFA, and PhD courses. He is currently serving as a ceramic art professor at the Seoul National University of Science and Technology. He was awarded the grand prize at the Seoul Contemporary Ceramic Art Contest held in 2011 and, two years later, selected as the Hot Rookie for the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale. His works have been displayed to the art-loving public through many prestigious museums and art galleries in Korea and overseas, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, Saatchi Gallery in London, and Nansong Museum in China. The artist attracts his viewers almost instantly with the Korean traditional ceramic works reinterpreted with modern sensibility by displaying luxurious collage patterns and drips of colorful glazes created on the surface of the traditional Korean celadon (Cheongja) and white porcelain (Baekje) ware. He also loves combining the world’s renowned brand logos and images of celebrities such as Coca-Cola and Marilyn Monroe with his ceramic works, guiding viewers to the coexistence of heterogeneity of different times and new artistic incitement.
