Welcome to Teum by U+. We now invite you into the world of artist Gwon Osang, who has dissolved the boundaries between photography and sculpture. Following 〈Gwon Osang’s Simplexity : AI, Human and Art〉 PART I, PART II is presented together with the Galaxy S26 Series, offering new interpretations and new meanings. The term ‘Simplexity’, a fusion of ‘Simple’ and ‘Complexity’, is redefined in PART II as the present condition of humanity, which has built up a new civilization through countless experiments and adventures, using the ‘device’ as a mediator. Gwon Osang’s working method, in which thousands of photographic fragments are used as tools to construct a single figure, closely aligns with this concept. His attempt to pioneer a new sculptural language by replacing traditional materials such as stone and bronze with lightweight photographs and Iso-Pink (Polyurethane foam board) stands as evidence of humanity’s progressive spirit in expanding the world through creative devices. From the 〈Deodorant Type〉 series to 〈The Flat〉, 〈Relief〉, and 〈Mobile〉, the artist has persistently experimented with the possibilities of photo sculpture. His collaborations with Hermès, BMW, and G-DRAGON, as well as his participation in the 〈Hallyu! The Korean Wave〉 special exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), demonstrate his active presence on the international stage and the global attention his work continues to receive. This exhibition, presented in collaboration with the Galaxy S26 Series, unfolds the encounter between art and technology through a narrative flow : Device (1F) – Voyage (3F) – A New Civilization (4F). The artist states: “In the vast universe, we were once nothing more than a small life form. By inventing devices, we at last became something special.” We hope this exhibition becomes a meaningful journey reflecting on how art and technology have defined and advanced human civilization.


[1F] SIMPLEXITY I : Device
On the first floor, you encounter 〈Air-Mass〉, a monumental form composed of countless photographic fragments. The presence of the Galaxy S26 Series throughout the space may initially feel unfamiliar. Yet both art and technology have developed through the novelty of innovation. The artist’s challenge, which goes beyond existing sculptural materials such as stone and bronze, and Samsung’s pursuit of “technology the world has never seen,” align within the same space and in the same direction.

[2F] Experience Becoming Art, My Simply
The second floor, the final stage of the exhibition journey, is a contemplative space dedicated to exploring “Experience of Becoming Art, My Simply.” Here, we move beyond viewing alone and encounter two interactive experiences through which you become an active agent of art.

[3F] SIMPLEXITY II : Voyage
The third floor consists of the 〈Deodorant Type〉 series. Human civilization, which began with primitive devices, was able to expand into a wider world through voyages. Among the Reclining Figures of the 〈Deodorant Type〉 series, the work shaped after the image of a ship embodies the thematic concept of voyage on this floor. Contained within it are the excitement and desire of those who once set out toward unknown worlds beyond the sea. Today, we are both their descendants and new adventurers continuing our own voyages.
 
[4F] SIMPLEXITY III : A New Civilization
The final floor symbolizes a ‘new civilization.’ Here, images scatter throughout the space like stars in a night sky. Moving freely among the gently swaying fragments, you may experience a sensation akin to swimming through the cosmos. Since the moon landing of Apollo 11 in 1969, humanity has become a species that pioneers space as a new civilization. The act of appreciating art itself may also be closely connected to this instinct to venture toward the unknown worlds.

In Closing : The Question Raised by New Devices and New Art
The Device we call the smartphone allows us to explore a world of boundless information and knowledge, guiding us beyond the limits of imagination. The artist poses a question : in the end, what is a device to us? In an era when AI increasingly occupies domains once considered uniquely human, what should we seek through our devices? Art is a device that twists established order and convention to generate new forms of reflection. We hope that this exhibition, 〈Gwon Osang’s Simplexity: AI, Human, and Art〉 PART II, leaves a deep question within you, and becomes a point of departure for discovering your own answer.

일상비일상의틈 by U+에 오신 여러분을 환영합니다. 지금부터 사진과 조각의 경계를 허문 아티스트, 권오상 작가의 작품 세계로 여러분을 초대합니다. 〈권오상의 Simplexity : AI, 인간 그리고 예술〉 PART I에 이어, Galaxy S26 Series와 함께하는 PART II를 새로운 해석과 의미를 담아 선보입니다. 단순함(Simple)과 복잡함(Complexity)이 결합된 상태를 뜻하는 ‘심플렉시티(Simplexity)’는 PART II에서 ‘도구(Device)’를 매개로 수많은 시도와 모험을 통해 새로운 문명을 축적해 온 인류의 현재로 재정의됩니다. 수천 장의 사진 조각을 도구 삼아 하나의 형상을 구축하는 권오상 작가의 작업 방식은 이 개념과 맞닿아 있습니다. 전통 조각의 재료였던 돌과 청동 대신, 가벼운 사진과 아이소핑크(압축 스티로폼)를 활용해 새로운 조형 언어를 개척한 작가의 시도는, 창의적 도구를 통해 세계를 확장해 온 인류의 진취성의 증거이기도 합니다. 〈데오도란트 타입〉에서 〈더 플랫〉, 〈릴리프〉, 〈모빌〉 연작에 이르기까지 작가는 사진 조각의 가능성을 끊임없이 실험해 왔습니다. 또한 에르메스, BMW, G-DRAGON과의 협업, 영국 빅토리아 앤드 앨버트 뮤지엄(V&A)의 한류 특별전 참여 등 국제 무대에서도 활발한 활동을 이어가며 세계적 주목을 받고 있습니다. Galaxy S26 Series와 컬래버로 선보이는 이번 전시는 예술과 기술의 만남을 ‘도구(1F) – 항해(3F) – 새로운 문명(4F)’이라는 서사적 흐름으로 풀어냅니다. 작가는 우리에게 다음과 같이 말합니다. “거대한 우주에서 하나의 작은 생명체에 불과했던 우리는, 도구를 발명함으로써 마침내 특별한 존재가 되었다.” 이번 전시가 예술과 기술이 인류의 문명을 어떻게 정의하고 발전시켜 왔는지를 조망하는 의미 있는 여정이 되기를 바랍니다.

[1F] SIMPLEXITY I : 도구
1층에서는 수많은 사진 조각이 모여 하나의 거대한 형체를 이루는 〈에어-매스〉를 만나게 됩니다. 공간 곳곳에 위치한 Galaxy S26 Series와의 공존은 낯설게 느껴질 수도 있습니다. 그러나 예술과 기술 모두 혁신이라는 새로움을 통해 발전해 왔습니다. 돌과 청동이라는 기존의 도구를 넘어선 작가의 도전과, ‘세상에 없던 기술’을 추구해 온 삼성의 지향점은 한 공간에서 같은 방향을 바라보고 있습니다.

[2F] 작품이 되는 경험, 나만의 Simply
전시의 마지막 여정인 2층은 ‘작품이 되는 경험, 나만의 Simply’를 탐색하는 사유의 공간입니다. 이곳에서 우리는 단순한 감상을 넘어, 스스로 예술의 주체가 되는 두 가지 특별한 경험을 마주하게 됩니다.

[3F] SIMPLEXITY II : 항해
3층은 〈데오도란트 타입〉 연작으로 구성됩니다. 원시적 도구에서 시작된 인류의 문명은 항해를 통해 비로소 더 넓은 세계로 확장되었습니다. 〈데오도란트 타입〉 와상(누워있는 조각) 연작 중 배의 이미지를 형상화한 작품의 존재는 3층의 콘셉트인 항해의 의미를 대변합니다. 바다 너머 미지의 세계를 향해 나아가던 이들의 설렘과 욕망이 작품에 담겨 있기 때문입니다. 오늘의 우리는 그들의 후손이자, 각자의 항해를 이어가는 또 다른 모험가들입니다.

[4F] SIMPLEXITY III : 새로운 문명
마지막 4층은 ‘새로운 문명’을 상징하는 공간입니다. 이곳에서 이미지는 밤하늘의 별처럼 조각조각 흩어져 공간을 채웁니다. 흔들리는 조각들 사이를 자유롭게 거닐며, 관람자는 마치 우주를 유영하는 듯한 감각을 경험하게 됩니다. 1969년 아폴로 11호의 달 착륙 이후, 인류는 우주라는 새로운 문명을 개척하는 존재가 되었습니다. 우리가 예술을 감상하는 행위 또한, 미지의 세계를 향한 이러한 본능과 맞닿아 있는지도 모릅니다.

전시를 마치며 : 새로운 도구와 예술이 던지는 질문
스마트폰이라는 도구는 우리로 하여금 무한한 정보와 지식의 세계를 탐험하게 하며, 상상의 경계를 넘어선 곳으로 이끕니다. 작가는 묻습니다. 결국 우리에게 도구란 무엇인가? AI가 인간의 영역을 대체해 가는 시대에, 우리는 도구를 통해 무엇을 추구해야 하는가? 예술은 질서와 문법을 비틀어 새로운 성찰을 만들어내는 장치입니다. 이번 〈권오상의 Simplexity : AI, 인간 그리고 예술〉 PART II 전시가 여러분 마음속에 깊은 질문을 남기고, 그에 대한 각자의 답을 찾아가는 출발점이 되기를 바랍니다.

1F Sound 도구
Cedar / Deeplearning
1층을 채우는 사운드는 호주 출신 아티스트 리차드 파이크의 프로젝트 딥러닝(Deeplearning)이 선보이는 <Cedar>입니다. 7분이 넘는 긴 시간 동안 오직 불협화음의 디지털 노이즈와 규칙적인 리듬만으로 전개되는 이 곡은, 작가의 작업실에서 발생하는 창작의 소음과 마침내 새로운 작품이 탄생되는 찰나의 긴장을 상징적으로 들려줍니다. 노련한 장인이 도구를 사용해 온전히 작업에 몰두한 듯한 이미지가 사운드의 전편을 통해 전달됩니다. 

3F Sound : 탄생 
Dream 1 (Part 1 -8) / Max Richter
3층에서는 현대 미니멀리즘 음악의 대가 막스 리히터의 <Dream 1 (Part 1-8)>이 흐릅니다. 떠나고 돌아오는, 모험의 반복적인 여정들이 하나의 테마를 미세하게 변주하여 이어지는 여덟 파트를 통해 들려집니다. 누군가는 항해의 목적을 달성하고, 또 누군가는 끝내 돌아오지 못함으로 그 여정을 마치기도 했을 것입니다. 거장의 음악은 그 모든 탐험가에 대한 찬사와 위로를 담아 잔잔히 공간을 부유합니다.

우리는 모두 별에서 왔으니 별로 돌아가는 것은 문명의 마지막 목표이자 삶의 은유일지도 모릅니다. 그 모든 결말은 서커스와 같은 하나의 축제로 정의됩니다. 쇼스타코비치의 왈츠부터 헨리 맨시니의 <아기 코끼리의 걸음>에 이르기까지, 마치 서커스 한복판에 들어선 듯한 활기찬 사운드가 펼쳐집니다. 이 경쾌한 선율들은 권오상의 작품들과 어우러져, 예술과 기술의 성취, 그리고 인생과 문명의 모든 과정을 즐거운 축제의 춤으로 승화시킵니다.​
