Welcome to Teum by LG U+. From here, we invite you into the world of artist Gwon Osang, whose practice dissolves the boundary between photography and sculpture. The exhibition’s theme, ‘Simplexity’, refers to a state in which simplicity and complexity converge. Though the term may sound ironic, it points to a moment when tangled fragments of information are gathered and organized, becoming clear and legible to our senses. In an age of ever-increasing technological complexity, LG U+ aims to curate and refine diverse technologies to create simpler, more intuitive experiences for daily life. Gwon Osang’s process resonates with this logic. Much like AI, which learns from vast amounts of data to produce results, Gwon assembles thousands of photographic fragments to construct a single figure. Instead of heavy traditional materials such as stone or bronze, he works with lightweight photographs and Iso-Pink (pink polyurethane foam), pioneering a new genre of photographic sculpture. From 〈Deodorant Type〉 to 〈The Flat〉, 〈Relief〉, and 〈Mobile〉, he has continually expanded the possibilities of this medium. His collaborations with Hermès, BMW, and G-DRAGON, as well as his participation as a featured artist in the 〈〈Hallyu! The Korean Wave〉〉 exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, have brought him wide international attention. This exhibition unfolds in three chapters, Incubation (1F) - Birth (3F) - Return (4F). In a space where technology and art coexist, the artist poses a question : “In an age overflowing with images generated by AI, what do we, as human beings, truly feel and choose?” May this exhibition become a journey toward discovering your own answer.


[1F] SIMPLEXITY I : The Frame Incubates the Object
On the first floor, you encounter the 〈Relief〉 series, works poised on the threshold between flatness and volume. Vivid consumer images are stacked in layers upon a frame of plywood, suggesting a stage of “incubation,” where forms remain not yet objects, but still images. These works mirror our position as passive spectators, our gaze fixed on the one-sided surface that media presents.

[2F] Experience Becoming Art, My Simply
The second floor, the final stage of the exhibition journey, is a contemplative space dedicated to exploring “Experience of Becoming Art, My Simply.” Here, we move beyond viewing alone and encounter two interactive experiences through which you become an active agent of art.

[3F] SIMPLEXITY II : Stepping Out Beyond the Plane, The Birth of Sculpture
The third floor, “Stepping Out Beyond the Plane, The Birth of Sculpture,” traces the moment flattened images break free of the picture plane and take on three-dimensional form. Here, a special encounter with the 〈Deodorant Type〉 “Reclining Figure” series reveals how thousands of photographic fragments merge into fully volumetric bodies.
 
[4F] SIMPLEXITY III : The Fragmented Sculpture, Return to Essence
The final fourth floor is a space of “The Fragmented Sculpture, Return to Essence.” Here, images scatter again, shards dispersing through the air and taking over the room. Walk freely among the swaying sculptures. In a time when images have become a language of life itself, you may find yourself experiencing firsthand what it means to truly sense something in its entirety.

In Closing : The Question Art Poses in the Age of AI
If AI is a technology that learns from existing data to produce the most efficient answer, then art may be the device that subverts that logic, bending familiar systems to create new insight and reflection. At the end of this journey, we meet one question again : “In an age of AI, where images and information overflow, what will we truly feel and what will we choose for ourselves?” May 〈Gwon Osang’s Simplexity: AI, Human, and Art〉 plant a quiet yet enduring question in your mind, and become a meaningful starting point for discovering an answer that is uniquely your own.

​일상비일상의틈 by U+에 오신 여러분을 환영합니다. 지금부터 사진과 조각의 경계를 허문 아티스트, 권오상 작가의 작품 세계로 여러분을 초대합니다. 전시의 주제인 ‘심플렉시티(Simplexity)’는 단순함(Simple)과 복잡함(Complexity)이 결합된 ‘상태’를 뜻합니다. 아이러니하게 느껴지는 이 단어는 곧 뒤엉킨 정보의 파편들이 정돈되어 우리의 감각으로 명료하게 인식되는 순간을 의미합니다. 유플러스는 기술이 점점 복잡해지는 시대에 다양한 기술을 선별하고 정리해 고객의 일상을 심플하게 만드는 경험을 지향합니다. 권오상 작가 역시 방대한 데이터를 학습해 결과를 도출하는 AI의 방식처럼, 수천 장의 사진 조각을 이어 붙여 하나의 형상을 만들어냅니다. 전통적인 조각의 소재인 무거운 돌이나 청동 대신, 가벼운 사진과 아이소핑크(압축 스티로폼)를 활용해 새로운 장르를 열었습니다. 〈데오도란트 타입〉부터 〈더 플랫〉, 〈릴리프〉, 〈모빌〉 연작에 이르기까지 끊임없이 사진 조각의 영역을 확장해 왔으며, 에르메스, BMW, G-DRAGON과의 협업, 그리고 영국 빅토리아 앤드 앨버트 뮤지엄의 한류 특별전에 대표 작가로 참여하는 등, 현재 세계적인 주목을 받고 있는 아티스트입니다. 이번 전시는 ‘잉태(1F) - 탄생(3F) - 환원(4F)’이라는 흐름을 따라 전개됩니다. 기술과 예술이 공존하는 이 공간에서, 작가는 우리에게 묻습니다. “수많은 이미지가 범람하는 AI 시대, 우리는 스스로 무엇을 느끼고 선택할 것인가?” 이번 전시가 작가의 질문에 대한 여러분의 답을 찾는 여정이 되기를 바랍니다.

[1F] SIMPLEXITY I : 사물을 잉태한 프레임 
1층에서는 평면과 입체의 경계에 서 있는 〈릴리프〉 연작을 마주합니다. 자작나무 합판이란 사각의 틀 위로 화려한 소비재들을 층층이 쌓아 올려 형상들이 아직 사물이 아닌 이미지의 ‘잉태’ 단계임을 표현합니다. 이는 미디어가 보여주는 일방적 단면에 시선이 고정된 수동적인 감상자로서 우리의 위치를 투영합니다.

[2F] 작품이 되는 경험, 나만의 Simply
전시의 마지막 여정인 2층은 ‘작품이 되는 경험, 나만의 Simply’를 탐색하는 사유의 공간입니다. 이곳에서 우리는 단순한 감상을 넘어, 스스로 예술의 주체가 되는 두 가지 특별한 경험을 마주하게 됩니다.

[3F] SIMPLEXITY II : 평면 밖으로 걸어 나온 조각의 탄생
3층 ‘평면 밖으로 걸어 나온 조각의 탄생’에서는 납작한 사진들이 평면의 세계를 탈출해 3차원의 몸을 얻는 순간을 목격합니다. 수천 장의 이미지가 결합해 비로소 부피를 가진 존재로 다시 태어난 〈데오도란트 타입〉, 와상(누워있는 조각) 시리즈와의 특별한 만남이 기다리고 있습니다.

[4F] SIMPLEXITY III : 파편화된 조각, 본질로의 환원
마지막 4층은 ‘파편화된 조각, 본질로의 환원’의 공간입니다. 이곳에서 이미지는 다시 태초의 모습처럼 조각조각 흩어져 공간을 장악합니다. 흔들리는 조각들 사이를 자유롭게 거닐어 보세요. 이미지가 곧 삶의 언어가 된 시대에, 무언가를 온전히 ‘감각한다’는 것이 어떤 의미인지 스스로 체험하게 될 것입니다.

전시를 마치며 : AI 시대, 예술이 던지는 질문
AI가 이미 존재하는 데이터를 학습해 가장 ‘효율적인 답’을 산출하는 기술이라면, 예술은 그 익숙한 질서와 문법을 비틀어 ‘새로운 성찰’을 만들어 내는 장치일 것입니다. 전시의 여정을 마치며, 우리는 결국 하나의 질문과 마주하게 됩니다. “수많은 이미지와 정보가 범람하는 AI 시대에, 우리는 과연 스스로 무엇을 느끼고 선택할 것인가?” 권오상의 Simplexity : AI, 인간 그리고 예술〉 전시가 여러분 가슴 속에 묵직한 물음표를, 그리고 그에 대한 여러분만의 답을 찾아가는 소중한 출발점이 되기를 바랍니다.
