2023년은 한국과 영국의 수교 140주년이 되는 의미 있는 해입니다. 이를 기념하기 위해,
더 트리니티 갤러리와 주한영국대사관은 6월 1일 부터 7월 15일까지 사진작가 원범식의 <건축조각 2023 : UK ARCHISCULPTURE>展을 공동 개최합니다. 

원범식 작가의 작품 제목 ‘건축조각(Archisculpture)’은 건축(Architecture)과 조각(Sculpture)의 합성어입니다. 이는 전세계의 유명 건물 사진을 수집해서 작가만의 감각으로 재조립하는 콜라주 방식을 의미합니다. 이 연작을 통해 작가는 국내 최고의 권위를 인정 받는 일우사진상을 수상, 영국 사진가 협회상 파이널리스트에 오르며 국내를 대표하는 현대미술 사진 작가로서 주목받게 됩니다. 

작가 원범식과 영국의 인연은 그의 런던 유학 시절부터 시작되었습니다. 그래서 그의 작품에서는 영국의 흔적을 찾아보는 것이 어렵지 않습니다. 영국 버킹엄 궁전부터 조앤 롤링이 해리포터 시리즈의 영감을 받은 것으로 알려진 에든버러의 카페까지, 작가는 영국 곳곳에서 채집한 건물 이미지들을 해체한 뒤, 마치 레고를 쌓아 올리듯 조립해 하나의 ‘건축조각’을 설계합니다. 이때 개개의 건축물들은 통시적 또는 공시적 역사를 지닌, 혹은 그 모두를 담고 있는 아름다운 조각으로 재탄생하게 됩니다. 이 초현실적인 도시의 환영을 통해 작가는 사회와 관습이 규정한 견고한 틀에 의문을 던지고 재해석하며, 감상자와 공유하고 싶은 새로운 세상을 제시합니다.

특히 이번 전시에서는 한국과 영국의 수교 140 주년을 기념하기 위해, 양국의 건축물들을 한 프레임에 조화시킨 작품, 그리고 영국 왕실을 가장 상징적으로 드러내는 건물들로 구성한 작품 등을 발표합니다. 이번 <건축조각 2023 : UK ARCHISCULPTURE>展을 통해, 예술의 힘으로 양국의 문화 교류를 강화하고 두 국가의 평화와 화합을 다지는 장이 되기를 기대합니다.

“(나의) 콜라주 기법은 각 요소를 충돌시키면서 겉으로 드러나지 않는 이야기를 한다. (…) 사진에 ‘푼크툼(punctum)’이 있다면 분명 이곳에 사용된 건축물들은 어떤 면에서 작가의 ‘푼크툼’이며 이들의 조합이 바로 [건축조각] 사진이다.”

 2023 is a meaningful year as it marks 140 years of UK-Korea diplomatic relations. To commemorate this, The Trinity Gallery and the British Embassy Seoul have joined together to co-host <건축조각 2023: UK ARCHISCULPTURE>, the exhibition of photographer Beomsik WON.
 
Archisculpture, the title of Beomsik WON’s artwork, is a combination of the words ‘architecture’ and ‘sculpture’. It refers to a collage method in which a collection of photographs of famous buildings from all over the world are reassembled according to the artist’s own perspective. Through this series of artwork, WON received the Ilwoo Photography Award, recognized as Korea’s most prestigious award in the field of photography. WON was also a finalist for the AOP Student Awards, announced by the Association of Photographers in the UK, thus drawing attention as a representative Korean contemporary art photographer.
 
Beomsik WON’s relationship with the UK began when the artist was studying abroad in London. That’s why it’s easy to find traces of the country in his artwork. WON dismantled images of buildings collected from all over the UK, from Buckingham Palace in England to the café in Edinburgh, Scotland where J.K. Rowling is said to have created the Harry Potter series, and reassembled them as if stacking up Lego blocks to design Archisculpture. What exists now as disparate structures are reborn as beautiful sculptures which retain their diachronic or synchronic histories, or else encompass it all. WON used this illusion of a surreal city to question and reinterpret the solid framework defined by society and customs and present a new world he wanted the viewers to see.
 
This exhibition celebrates 140 years of UK-Korea relations by showcasing the artworks that bring buildings from both countries together in one harmonious frame. It also includes new artwork composed of buildings that symbolize the British royal family. We hope that the <건축조각 2023: UK ARCHISCULPTURE> exhibition will serve as a venue for reinforcing cultural exchanges and empowering peace and harmony between the UK and Korea with the power of art.
 
“The collaging employed in the process of making Archisculpture tells the stories that were beneath the surface, through the collision of disparate elements. If a photograph has a ‘punctum’, then clearly the architectural works used here will in certain ways be the artist’s ‘punctum’ and their assemblage will be the Archisculpture Photo.”
