더 트리니티 갤러리는 2023년 8월 24일부터 10월 28일까지 유의정 작가의 <유의정 : 도자산책 陶磁散策>展을 개최합니다. 경이로운 첨단 기술 발전에 의해 끊임없이 변화하는 풍경들을 마주하는 오늘날, 지나간 시대의 유물은 우리에게 어떤 가치를 지닐까요? 도자 예술은 인간의 손에 의해 태어난 가장 오래된 조형예술 중 하나입니다. 그렇기에 지금까지 그 명맥을 이어온 도자 예술의 역사는 수천 년에 걸쳐 다듬어진 상징적인 언어와 상상의 구조를 함축하고 있습니다. 현재 도구의 고도화로 예술마저도 효율의 극대화가 합리의 기준이 되면서, 현대 도예가 유의정 작가는 ‘도예란 무엇인가’에 대한 근본적인 물음에 다시 한번 직면합니다.
홍익대학교 미술대학부터 동 대학원 석사와 박사 과정까지 모두 도예를 전공하고 현재 서울과학기술대학교에서 도예과 교수로 재직 중인 유의정 작가는, ‘도예’를 인간이 태초부터 가지고 놀았던 재료인 흙을 이용해 만드는 모든 것을 통칭하는 예술의 형태라고 정의해 왔습니다. 그래서 작가는 인류의 최초 예술 중 하나인 도예의 전통적 재현방식에 충실하면서도 시대의 흐름에 따라 도예 작품을 조합하고 해체하여, 새로운 의미를 모색하고 창조합니다. 전통적인 축적 혹은 시간적인 섭렵의 과정을 존중하는 동시에, 모종의 실험과 가치를 현대에서 끊임없이 추구하는 것입니다.
이번 전시에서 선보이는 유의정 작가의 작품은 은유와 상징으로 가득 찬 도자예술의 조형 언어를 탐구한 결과물입니다. 작가는 한국 청자와 백자 위의 패턴을 작가만의 강렬한 유약의 형태로 흘러내리게 덧입히거나, 완벽에 가깝게 재현해 낸 유물 위에 현대의 이념을 상징하는 브랜드 로고나 상품 이미지를 화려한 콜라주로 조합합니다. 이를 통해, 도자예술의 조형 체계가 내포한 유연함과 잠재성을 동시대 예술의 언어로써 발견하게끔 합니다. 작가가 감각하는 도자예술의 전통과 역사의 메아리가 현대에서 발현된 작가의 창의성과 매끄럽게 어우러지면서, 담백하면서도 극명한 유의정 작가만의 조형적 언어 세계가 펼쳐집니다. 이번 전시를 통해, 그 유려한 세계에서 거닐 듯 도자의 역사를 바라보는 산책의 시간을 가져 보시길 바랍니다.

​The Trinity Gallery presents the exhibition “Yoo Eui-Jeong: 도자산책 陶磁散策” by artist Yoo Eui-Jeong from August 24 to October 28, 2023.
 
What value does the relic from the bygone era hold for us today, surrounded by constantly changing landscapes brought about by impressive cutting-edge technological advancement? Ceramic art is one of the oldest figurative arts created by human hands. The history of ceramic art that has continued to this day connotes symbolic languages and imaginary structures exquisitely sculpted over thousands of years. In the era when the advancement of modern tools led art to embrace maximal efficiency as its logical standard, contemporary ceramic artist Yoo Eui-Jeong once again faces the fundamental question “What is ceramics?”
 
Having majored in ceramics at the College of Fine Arts, Hongik University and received his master’s and doctorate in ceramics, ceramic artist Yoo Eui-Jeong currently teaches ceramics at the Seoul National University of Science and Technology. The artist has defined ceramics as a form of art made of earthen elements like clay, which humanity has played with from the beginning of time. Based on this belief, Yoo reenacts traditional methods to create ceramic works—the earliest form of art by humanity—while seeking to create and find new meanings by assembling and dismantling ceramic works befitting the trend of the times. By accumulating traditions and respecting extensive experiences over time, he aims to pursue continuously a kind of experiment and value in today’s context.
 
Yoo’s ceramic works at the exhibition result from the artist’s artistic attempt to explore figurative languages filled with metaphors and symbols. On the surface of Yoo’s artwork, the pattern of Korean traditional Goryeo celadon and white porcelain flows down in the form of glaze or created an elaborate collage on almost perfectly reproduced relics by incorporating brand logos or product images symbolizing contemporary concepts. Such processes can allow viewers to discover the potential and flexibility embraced by the figurative system of ceramic art as a language of contemporary art. When the tradition of ceramic art sensed by the artist and echoes of Korean art history smoothly merged with the artist’s creativity inspired by contemporariness, the world of figurative language—clean and clear, thus unique to Yoo Eui-Jeong—unravels. We at The Trinity Gallery hope that viewers at the exhibition can enjoy the promenade to see the history of ceramic art as if strolling in the world of elegance.
 
“On the metaverse and virtual reality: Demanded to have the competency to devise a transcendental world beyond reality, people these days are once again awakened by our abilities, which have been lost for a while. Inspiring us with expectation and imagination, the metaverse and virtual reality seem to have heralded the arrival of our time to travel into the new world beyond the real world. As always, ceramic art can be the start of all things.”
